Traditional Use Organ Support: Indications of Weak Links
According to Dr. Rademacher and Dr. Compton-Burnett, these were patterns that suggested a need for support for each of these twelve important organs / structures. If you notice some of these indications for yourself, you may want to talk to your holistic practitioner about any health concerns, and discuss adding organ support to your therapeutic plan.

Liver
- Sluggish in the morning, slow to fully wake, not hungry until later in the day
- Chronic constipation, recurrent hemorrhoids
- Foggy thinking, headaches related to excess body toxins
- Yellow coating on tongue
- Liver area feels heavy or full
- Hormonal dysregulation (sluggish liver filters hormones poorly)

Spleen, Lymph
- Frequent stomach pains, indigestion, and tendency to diarrhea
- Frequent colds, chronic cough, swollen glands, weak immunity
- Easy bruising, tend toward excessive bleeding (nose bleeds, heavy menstrual flow)
- Itchy area on the skin between the breasts
- “Stitch in the side” sensation in the left rib area
- Chronic fluid retention, swellings

Respiratory
- Frequent or recurrent sinus infections, post-nasal drip, blocked nose
- Repeated lung infections and cough (bronchitis, pneumonia)
- Chest sensation of heaviness or tight band
- Frequent yawning, feeling short of breath
- Waking 3-5am, with respiratory discomfort
- Reactive to dust, pollen, mold or chemicals, which cause sneezing, coughing, wheezing, etc

Heart / Blood Vessels
- Tightness, soreness or sense of constriction in the chest
- Heart beat that feels too frequent or strong
- Pulse that can be felt in various body parts
- Easy faintness on quickly standing
- Waking frequently or difficulty sleeping 11pm – 1am
- Blood vessels that are stiff or clogged (affecting blood pressure), or weakened (varicose or collapsing)

Urinary / Kidney / Bladder
- Repeated urinary infections, especially without apparent cause
- Urine that is frequently strong in color or odor
- History of stones in the urinary tract (kidneys, ureters or bladder), or urine contains grit
- Appearance of mucous in the urine
- Chronic ache in the mid-back kidney area, without apparent cause

Reproductive / Uterus
- Menstrual cycles that are irregular, painful or absent, or flow too heavy or too light
- Sensation of heaviness or particular awareness of the uterus within the pelvis
- Low back pain with ovulation or menstruation
- Difficulty conceiving or carrying a full pregnancy
- Formation of fibroids, cysts, thickenings of tissue

Gallbladder
- Digestive upsets, especially with rich, high-fat foods or large meals
- Episodes of sharp abdominal pain, below the breastbone, often extending to the back (often called ‘gall bladder colic’)
- Back pain between the shoulder blades, often with nausea
- History of weakness in the liver and uterus

Brain / Nerves
- Anxiety and irritability from everyday life events
- Difficulty focusing, unclear thinking
- Chronic disruption of sleep from sleeplessness, frequent waking, or disturbing dreams
- Spine repeatedly out of alignment, needing frequent adjustment
- Neuralgic pain, “zings” or twitches
- Restless legs, especially in bed at night

Muscles, Bones, Connective Tissue
- Soreness in the muscles, even after minimal exertion
- Repeated sprains and strains
- Discomfort in joints when moving, often with the need to ‘warm up” the muscles on first motion
- History of easy dislocation of joints
- Local redness, heat or swelling around joints
- Frequent need for change of position

Pancreas
- Unstable blood sugar, with highs and lows
- Poor digestion with gas and bloating
- Necessity for supplemental digestive enzymes
- Frequent loose stools, often passed with cramping
- Discomfort in the mid to upper back that is relieved by bending forward
- Understand the heart’s role in circulation and signs of cardiovascular stress.

Blood
- History of low iron levels in the blood
- Abnormal clotting tendencies, with with too much or too little clotting for healthy tissue
- Frequent and unexplained bruising
- Slow repair from injuries and wounds
- Frequent microbial or viral infections
- History of septic infections, cellulitis or gout

Eyes
- Chronic redness and irritation of the eyes
- Eyes slow to recover after an irritation such as a scratch from foreign material in the eye
- Eyes that are overly sensitive to sunlight or bright indoor lights
- Excessive watering of the eyes
- Sensation as if sand or grit in the eye when blinking
